The double monastery of the Poor Clares and the Franciscans in Windisch was founded in 1309 by Queen Elisabeth of Carinthia, in memory of her husband King Albrecht I of Habsburg. Built in the Gothic style, the church features hallmark elements such as pointed arches and an emphasis on verticality and light. Construction of the nave began in 1314, while the architectural choir, distinguished by its remarkable stained glass windows, was not completed until around 1330. The monastery was secularized in 1528 during the Protestant Reformation, and the church has served as a museum since 2009.

Its glass windows were created between 1320 and 1360 and are among the most important examples of 14th-century stained glass in Europe. While some of them were destroyed over time, luckily almost none of the designs were lost and they could be recreated, for example during renovations at the end of the 19th century by glass painter Richard Nüscheler.
