Founded in 1827, Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple and pays homage to the goddess Mariamman, curer of disease. It is located in the downtown Chinatown district of Singapore and while its oldest structures date back to 1843, most of it was built in the south Indian Dravidian style in 1862 and 1863. The walkway between the main entrance and the shrine was built by Swan and Maclaren in 1915.

The six-tiered gopuram (entrance tower) was built in 1925 and repaired and restored in the 1960s. It is decorated with colorful sculptures of Hindu deities. A separate hall houses an image of Sri Aravan, serving as a defense against spirits.
