Campus Biotech, located in Geneva, Switzerland, is a leading research and innovation hub specializing in biotechnology and life sciences. Located on the former Merck Serono site, the campus was launched in 2013 after the pharmaceutical company announced the closure of its headquarters.
The design team of Helmut Jahn, Werner Sobek, and Matthias Schuler created a highly sustainable headquarters for Merck Serono, covering 40,000 square meters. Built between 2004 and 2007, the building emphasizes flexibility and openness. Its central atrium, which includes a retractable roof, allows natural light to flood the space. Sustainability was a core principle in the design, and one of the key environmental features is the use of Lake Geneva as a renewable energy source: water from the lake is utilized both to heat and cool the building.
