Helmut Jahn

Helmut Jahn was a prominent German-American architect. Born in 1940 in Zirndorf, Germany, he studied architecture at the Technische Hochschule in Munich before moving to the United States in 1966 to continue his education at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago. Jahn's career took off in the 1970s when he joined the Chicago firm C.F. Murphy Associates. His first major project was the State of Illinois Center in Chicago, completed in 1985. One of Jahn's most celebrated works is the Sony Center at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. The project is renowned for its high-tech canopy, a striking steel and glass roof that covers the central plaza, creating an iconic urban space. Helmut Jahn died in a cycling accident in May 2021 in Campton Hills, Illinois, at the age of 81.
