The Van Gogh Museum is situated on the Museumplein in Amsterdam and houses the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings in the world. These artwork, combined with an extensive collection of letters, sketches, and personal items, offer an unparalleled insight into the artist's creative genius.
The museum, which opened in 1973, was designed by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld, a leading figure in the De Stijl movement. Rietveld's original design is characterized by its clean lines, geometric forms, and functionalist approach, embodying the principles of modernist architecture.
In 1999, the museum complex was expanded with a new exhibition wing designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. The curved glass facade of the Exhibition Wing allows for ample daylight to illuminate the interior, creating a bright and welcoming space for temporary exhibitions.
