Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch painter whose emotionally charged, expressive style made him one of the most influential figures in Western art. Born in the Netherlands in 1853, Van Gogh initially pursued careers in ministry and art dealing before committing to painting in his late twenties. Despite struggling with mental illness and financial hardship throughout his life, he produced more than 2,000 works, including over 800 oil paintings, in just a decade. Van Gogh’s mental health struggles culminated in periods of hospitalization, and he died at 37 from a gunshot wound in what is believed to have been suicide.
