Toni-Areal was originally built in the late 1970s for the Toni-Molkerei, later called Swiss Dairy Food. It was Europe's largest dairy transformation complex and was able to transform up to 1 million litres of milk per day. The dairy transformation was closed in 1999.
It re-opened, now used by the Züricher Hochschule der Künste, in 2014. The transformation project was led by EM2N architects.
