Zernez in Grisons has a population of about 1500. As a major node in the regional road network, Zernez is a main gateway for visitors of the Swiss National Park. The Swiss National Park was created in 1914 and is, with an area of 172 square kilometres, Switzerland largest nature preserve.
Designed by Valerio Olgiati and completed in 2008, the visitor center houses temporary and permanent exhibitions on three floors. It is made of light concrete containing clay pellets, needing no additional insulation. Geometrically, the visitor centre is composed of two joined cubes.
