The Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore (Church of the Most Holy Redeemer) is a Roman Catholic church located on the island of Giudecca in Venice, Italy. It was designed by the famous Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio and completed in 1592. The church was built as a votive offering to God in gratitude for the end of the plague that devastated Venice between 1575 and 1577, killing nearly a third of the city's population.
The Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore is one of Andrea Palladio's most iconic works and is regarded as a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. It features Palladio's signature neoclassical style, with a grand façade, dominated by a triangular pediment supported by Corinthian columns, reminiscent of an ancient Roman temple.
The Redentore church holds significant religious and cultural importance in Venice. Every year, the city celebrates the Festa del Redentore (Feast of the Redeemer) on the third weekend of July to commemorate the end of the plague. As part of the festivities, a temporary, 330 meters long pontoon bridge is constructed, connecting the island to the main city and allowing thousands of pilgrims to walk to the church for mass and celebrations.
