Build to plans by architect Alphonse de Kalbermatten, the cantonal penitentiary in Sion was inaugurated in 1913. It was designed for 28 prisoners. In 1954 a second floors was added to double its capacity. After renovations in 2000, Le Pénitentier is now used for temporary exhibitions of the cantonal museums of Valais.
