Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay was designed by Singaporean architecture firm DP Architects and built between 1996 and 2002. The Lyric Theatre has a capacity for 2000 people and the Concert Hall is able to seat 1600 people. The more than 7000 triangular aluminium sunshades covering the buildings give it an appearance similar to the durian fruit.
