The Abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune dates from the 6th century. It was founded to honour the martyrdom of the Theban legion and is known for the perpetual psalmody that was practiced here for three centuries.
Three excavation campaigns in 1896, 1944 and 2001 on the archaeological site of the Abbaye allowed to arrive at a coherent account of the buildings that have occupied the place over the ages.
Since 2009, the site is covered and protected by a large translucent roof hanging from the rock, designed by savioz fabrizzi architectes.
