Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza was commissioned by Pope Urban VIII as the chapel for the University of Rome, also known as the Sapienza, which had been established in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII. Designed by architect Francesco Borromini and constructed between 1642 and 1660, the church is celebrated for its innovative architectural design and its unique spiral lantern.
