In 1973, Léonard Gianadda had planned to build an apartment high-rise on a lot in Martigny. During the excavations, a Roman temple was found in June 1976. When in July 1976 his brother Pierre Gianadda died in a plane crash, Léonard decided to transform the apartment complex into a foundation. Fondation Pierre Gianadda was inaugurated in 1978. Léonard Gianadda died on December 3rd 2023 at age 88.

A large sculpture park is located behind the main exhibition building.
