In 1973, Léonard Gianadda had planned to build an apartment high-rise on a lot in Martigny. During the excavations, a Roman temple was found in June 1976. When in July 1976 his brother Pierre Gianadda died in a plane crash, Léonard decided to transform the apartment complex into a foundation. Fondation Pierre Gianadda was inaugurated in 1978. Léonard Gianadda died on December 3rd 2023 at age 88.

The side of the Szafran pavilion features the monumental ceramic mural "L'escalier", created by Sam Szafran and Joan Gardy Artigas in 2005.
