The history of Château de Chillon, located in Lake Geneva between Montreux and Villeneuve, goes back to the 12th century. With over 350000 annual visitors, it is amongst the most visited medieval castles in Europe and has inspired many poets and writers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo and Lord Byron.

Château de Chillon is built on the island of Chillon guarding the passage between the Rhone Valley and the Vaud Riviera. In spring, yellow pollen can sometimes be seen floating on the Lake and around the castle.

The building started to be restored at the end of the 19th century leading to one of the first usages of archaeology and history in order to rebuild a castle in a historically accurate way.
