The history of the Castle of Gruyères goes back to 1270. It was purchased by the canton of Fribourg in 1938 and then converted into a museum. It is Switzerland's second most visited castle, after the nearby Chillon castle.
The Gruyères castle is built on a 115-meter high hill, providing it with an important strategic position. The castle actually was never attacked during the Middle Ages.

As the castles in Chillon and Bulle, Château de Gruyères was built using the design of the savoyard square. These days, the castle also has a beautiful French garden.
