The housing complex known as “The Smurfs,” constructed between 1982 and 1984 by Swiss architects Christian Hunziker, Robert Frei, and Georges Berthoud, is a striking example of postmodern architecture. Rejecting the rigidity of modernist orthodoxy, the design embraces curvilinear forms, boldly colored façades, and expressive details such as undulating balconies and ornate wrought-iron railings, resulting in a whimsical, organic ensemble that evokes the spirit of Gaudí and the narrative playfulness characteristic of postmodernism.
