The initial buildings on the EPFL campus were designed by architectural practice Zweifel, Strickler & associates, winner of the architectural competition held in 1969. They were inaugurated in 1978. Gray aluminum panels cover most of the façade while a three-dimensional steel lattice supports the roof.

Several large scale art installations can also be found on the campus. "Jocky 27", created by André Nallet in 1979, consists of two parallelepipeds in red thermo-lacquered aluminum, fixed to two black circular tubes. This 27 meters high sculpture is still the tallest work on Campus.
