Since 1849, Basel's Naturhistorisches Museum (Natural History Museum) has been housed in a purpose-built structure designed by the Basel architect Melchior Berri. Located on Augustinergasse in the heart of the historic center, the building represents one of the earliest examples of monumental museum architecture in Switzerland. In 1848, Johann Jakob Oechslin created the allegorical frieze.
