Kunsthalle Basel is a contemporary art institution located adjacent to the city's theater and opposite the concert house Stadtcasino. Established in 1872, it is the oldest Kunsthalle in the country.
Designed by architect Johann Jakob Stehlin-Burckhardt, the neoclassical building was constructed between 1869 and 1872. Above the skylight of the main exhibition hall, Kunsthalle Basel has a domed copper roof. In 1882, Charles Iguel added reliefs to the main façade, depicting allegorical figures of Architecture and the Rhine.
