Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum guides visitors through a chronological journey of Dutch art and history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. With a total collection of over 1 million objects, among which are masterpieces by Vermeer and Rembrandt, it is the largest art museum in the Netherlands.
Designed by the Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, the current building was inaugurated in 1885 and is celebrated for its distinctive combination of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles.
