Burano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, about 7 kilometers from Venice proper. It can be reached by vaporetto (water bus) from Venice. Burano was likely settled during Roman times and by the 16th century, it became known for its lace-making.
Burano is world-renowned for its vibrant, multicolored houses, which line the island's canals and streets. Its houses are typically small, two- or three-story buildings with simple facades. Despite their modest size, the bold colors and the proximity to the canals give the town a distinctive and cheerful character. The exact origins of the tradition of painting houses in bright colors are unclear, though local folklore suggests that the fishermen who lived on the island painted their homes in distinctive colors so they could easily recognize them from a distance when returning from the sea, especially in foggy conditions.
