Dating back to the 13th century, and located next to the Hofvijver lake, the Binnenhof in The Hague was originally built as a residence for the counts of Holland. Serving as the heart of Dutch governance, the Binnenhof has been the center of political life in the Netherlands for centuries. The complex houses the meeting place of the States General of the Netherlands, which includes the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as the office of the Prime Minister.
