In 1982 an international competition was launched for the construction of a new opera house at Place de la Bastille in Paris. 756 entries were received and Carlos Ott, an Uruguayan architect living in Canada, won the competition. After 5 years of construction with a cost of 330 million €, the building was inaugurated on July 13 1989, on the eve of the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution.
The sleek and functional structure contrasts with the city's historical architecture, featuring a façade of glass and steel that allows natural light to flood its interior.
