Established in the 14th century, the BnF has grown to become one of the largest and most prestigious libraries in the world. is dedicated to the collection, archiving, and maintenance of a vast array of materials. This mission encompasses everything published or produced in France, as well as heritage items inherited from previous collections and acquired through donations, bequests, and purchases.
The Labrouste reading room was built between 1861 and 1868 to plans by French architect Henri Labrouste. The room is illuminated through domes, covered with faience tiles. Medallions of prominent literary figures from around the world, including Homer, Shakespeare and Racine, adorn the perimeter of the room.
