The Beaufort Castles, located in the eastern part of Luxembourg, consist of two distinct structures that represent different eras of architectural history: the medieval castle and the Renaissance chateau. Today, both the medieval castle and the Renaissance chateau are open to the public. The site also includes a distillery, where visitors can sample the locally produced cassero, a traditional liqueur.
Medieval Castle
The medieval Beaufort Castle, built between the 11th and 14th centuries, is a classic example of a feudal fortress, complete with defensive walls, towers, and a keep. This castle served as a stronghold and residence for the lords of Beaufort, playing a crucial role in the region’s medieval history. After the second half of the 18th century the castle remained uninhabited and at the beginning of the 19th century, was used as a quarry. Its owner, Edmond Linckels, opened it to visitors in 1932.

Renaissance Castle
The Renaissance chateau, constructed in the 17th century adjacent to the older structure, contrasts sharply with its medieval counterpart. Designed in the Renaissance style by military engineer Isaac von Treybach for Jean Baron de Beck, the chateau reflects the shift from military architecture to more comfortable, stately residences. After changing ownership several times, it was purchased in 1928 by Edmond Linckels, who began, in 1930, producing the cassero liqueur on-site, a tradition that continues today. Upon Linckels' death in 1975, his widow, Anne-Marie Linchels-Volmer, managed the estate. Following her death in 2012 at the age of 97, the Ministry of Culture took the initiative of opening the castle to the public for guided tours. All the interiors of the Château have remained as left by Madame Linckels.
