The Tate Britain art museum in London opened in 1897.

The front of its current building was designed by British architect Sidney R. J. Smith and built starting 1893. On top of the building are statues of a lion, a unicorn and Britannia, showing the Tate Britain's specialization on British art.

Located behind the main entrance and staircase, the Duveen Galleries were built to plans by American architect John Russel Pope and completed in 1937. The 100 meter long neo-classical galleries were the first public galleries in Britain designed for the display of sculptures.

The spiral staircase in the museum's entrance was created in 2013 during renovations to plans by Caruso St John. The rotunda balcony, closed since 1920, was also again made accessible to the public.

Since 2023, the museum's North staircase features the mural Requiem by British artist Chris Ofili. It remembers the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire and is a tribute to artist Khadija Saye who died during the fire.
