The Royal Fortress of Chinon rises above the Vienne on a long rocky spur. Though its origins go back to the early Middle Ages, the site took on its current form between the 12th and 15th centuries, when successive rulers strengthened the ramparts and expanded the residential buildings.

The Tour de l’Horloge, rebuilt in the 14ᵗʰ century and later fitted with a distinctive slate spire, marks the entrance to the eastern enclosure and once controlled access between the different sections of the fortress. Beyond it stand the royal apartments, reconstructed in the 15ᵗʰ century and notable for their large halls.
