Lausanne's Olympic Stadium was built between 1950 and 1952 to plans by Charles Thévenaz. It was planned with the organization in Switzerland of the Football World Cup in 1954 in mind. On May 23, 1954, the stadium was officially inaugurated in front of 43500 spectators and 5 matches of the Football World Cup were played in Lausanne. Its capacity was gradually reduced according to safety standards and is currently about 15000 places.
