Established in 1861 by Gustave-Adolphe Koëlla, the Conservatoire de Lausanne is a classical music school serving both amateur musicians and those pursuing professional careers (Haute École de musique de Lausanne). Together, both institutions have more than 1500 students.
Since 1990, the conservatory has been housed in the former "Galeries de Commerce" in the Saint-François district. The "Galeries de Commerce" were designed by Otto Schmid and Paul Rosset and built between 1908 and 1909.
