The Grande Dixence dam near Hérémence was built between 1950 and 1961. With a height of 285 meters, it is Switzerland's tallest structure and the tallest gravity dam in the world. The dam's water fuels four power stations, generating enough electricity for around 400,000 households. The dam is 200 meters wide at its base and 15 meters wide at its top. Around 6,000,000 cubic meters of concrete were used for its construction.
