The Kaplanei in Ernen was built in 1776. It was the residence and office of the local chaplain until 1952. In 2018, the Catholic parish of Ernen handed over the house to the Foundation Ferien im Baudenkmal. The necessary renovations were completed in 2023 and the building can now be rented as a vacation home.
The main living area with kitchen, dining room and living room is located on the second floor. The living room color was restored based on the best estimate of what the color original was.
The cube-shaped oven in the living room is decorated with depictions of Saint George, the patron saint of the church, and Saint Catherine with the Wheel, the patron saint of the chaplaincy. The floor lamps use a design created by Le Corbusier.
Located on the third floor, the house even featured a private chapel. Its ceiling was decorated with allegorical paintings. These are assumed to have been painted by Johann Georg Pfefferle.
The bedrooms are also located on the third floor. They are heated using a wood burning oven. In summer, there's also additional space inside the attic.
All floors are reachable through the interior staircase. The basement has seen the most adaptations and now contains modern sanitary installations and a music room.
