Dubai Opera, located in the heart of Downtown Dubai, was inaugurated in August 2016 with a performance by Plácido Domingo. Designed by architect Janus Rostock, the building’s architecture is inspired by the shape of a dhow, the traditional Arabian sailing vessel, symbolizing Dubai's maritime heritage. This design choice integrates seamlessly into the location next to the Dubai Fountain and offers striking views of the Burj Khalifa.
The venue seats approximately 1,900 guests and is designed with versatility in mind, featuring a unique convertible space that can be transformed into a traditional theater, concert hall, or flat-floor event venue, catering to various performances and functions.
The foyer features the stunning "Symphony" chandelier by Lasvit, a Czech design firm. This chandelier, with thousands of hand-blown glass droplets and over 3,000 LED lights, resembles a fishing net capturing bubbles underwater.
Private majlis with artwork are located near the Opera entrance.
Several commissioned artworks adorn the area around Dubai Opera. One notable piece is Khalvat, a 7-by-3-meter sculpture created in 2016 by Iranian artist Sahand Hesamian. The sculpture evokes the forms of both a carved diamond and a tree cone. Another striking work is a 30-meter bright pink stainless-steel sculpture by Dubai-based artist eL Seed. It features calligraphy of a quote by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum: "Art in all its colours and shapes reflects the culture of nations, their history and civilisations.". "Dhow Sail" by Beth Cullen-Kerridge, a 5-meter high marble sculpture is installed in front of the main entrance.
