The plans for the Pergamonmuseum in Berlin were originally developed by German architect by Alfred Messel between 1907 and 1909. After his death, the museum was built in a slightly simplified form by Ludwig Hoffmann. It was inaugurated in 1930.

On display inside the museum are various pieces of ancient monumental architecture such as the Pergamon Altar, the Ishtar Gate and the Market Gate of Miletus, built in the 2nd century AD. The two-story marble gate is about 30 meters wide and 16 meters tall and was excavated in 1907/1908 by Theodor Wiegand.
