Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter, illustrator, and printmaker, best known for his iconic poster La Tournée du Chat Noir (1896). Born in 1859 in Lausanne, Switzerland, Steinlen moved to Paris in the early 1880s. There, he became closely associated with the artistic circles, creating vivid and dynamic works that captured the spirit of Parisian nightlife. His oeuvre extends beyond poster art to include social realist paintings and prints depicting the working class, reflecting his deep concern for social issues. Throughout his career, Steinlen produced hundreds of works, including illustrations for newspapers and books. He passed away in 1923.
