Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was a Dutch painter and etcher, renowned for his mastery of light, shadow, and detail. Born in 1606 in Leiden, he moved to Amsterdam, where he established a successful studio and gained prominence with his vivid group portraits and dramatic compositions. One of his most famous works, The Night Watch (1642), exemplifies his innovative use of light and movement in a large-scale, dynamic composition, creating a sense of depth and life. Rembrandt was also a prolific self-portraitist, producing over 80 self-portraits that offer a window into his life and emotions over time. He passed in 1669.
