Born in Siegen in 1577 and later based in Antwerp, Peter Paul Rubens was a celebrated diplomat, intellectual and painter of the Baroque era. He created monumental altarpieces, portraits, mythological scenes, and allegorical works that shaped the visual language of 17th-century Europe. His prolific workshop attracted students and patrons from across the continent. He died in Antwerp in 1640.
