Aristide Maillol

Aristide Maillol was born in Banyuls-sur-Mer in 1861 and became a central figure in the evolution of modern sculpture in the early 20th century. Initially a painter and tapestry designer, he turned to sculpture in his late thirties, developing a classical, serene style that stood in contrast to the dramatic expressiveness of contemporaries like Rodin. He died in a car accident near his hometown in 1944.
